Interview with Pietro Puccio
Ahead of International Migrants Day (18 Dec) we spoke with Pietro Puccio, the CEMR spokesperson on migration and the mayor of Capaci, a Sicilian city taking part in the IncluCities project to improve migrant integration and build more inclusive cities. He shared with us his town’s experience in welcoming newcomers, as well his vision of a united Europe that is open and inclusive.

Foreword
Maria Grazia Montella, IncluCities Project Coordinator
|
Hi, there,
it’s a great pleasure for me to open this second edition of the IncluCities newsletter. This year has been a rollercoaster of emotions for the project and despite all the challenges we encountered, I am happy to say that we did an excellent work. All together, with a common effort and collaboration spirit, we closed the year with a lot of success! Two rounds of study visit completed, we published four video stories about each mentoring pair with politicians and key people behind the project involved. Interviews and articles featured in national and local newspapers, a great FB live event campaign for the World Refugee Day and another one coming for the International Migrants Day. And just before we close this year, the first IncluCities transfer knowledge workshop will take place, which emphasizes the lessons learned and takes stock from the work done so far! We are on track and ready for the upcoming challenges.
We wish you all a peaceful festive period!
Thanks for reading and see you next year:)
Grazia

News, deliverables, meetings ...
Over the past few months, the IncluCities cohort met for the Steering Committee meeting, we implemented four study visits in person and submitted a deliverable presenting the mentoring pairs in four videos we have produced together with our partners. Behind the scenes, also the work of the CEMR Task Force on Migration and Integration continues, as well as our collaboration with the Urban Agenda Inclusion Partnership.

IncluCities Study Visits |
IncluCities study visits in October and November were an excellent opportunity for cities and their associations to get together, exchange knowledge and best practices, as well to get first-hand experience on integration practices from the ground. An important step forward in the mentoring dynamics towards action plans of change in four different local contexts.
In this round, the team from Mechelen (BE) went to Sicily to visit their mentee, the city of Capaci and brainstorm on how to build a vision of a city for all. Jelgava (LV) visited Schaerbeek (BE) to learn more about different initiatives and opportunities for new arrivals and language learning. Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle (FR) visited the City of Brussels and got many insights from the reception centre for newcomers, BAPA BXL and their partners to start developing a strategic gender-senstive approach to welcome migrants in their city. The team from Levadia (GR) travelled to Fuenlabrada (ES) to see how social inclusion and labour market integration work in practice.
